Transportation

At the Center for Community Transportation, we envision a community where travel by shared and active transportation is healthy, safe, affordable, and convenient for all.

CCT's mission-focused services and activities include Ithaca Carshare, Bike Walk Tompkins (and its signature program Streets Alive! Ithaca), and Ithaca Bikeshare, emphasizing social equity and environmental sustainability in this era of new transportation options and emerging mobility trends.

CCT works with local transportation providers, educators, planners, decision-makers, advocates, and users to fulfill our mission of enhancing transportation access in our community while reducing its negative environmental and economic impacts. We work toward a dynamic and collaborative transportation sector that effectively identifies, advocates for, and provides solutions that serve our entire community.

ITHACA, NY – Tompkins County is thrilled to announce the official launch of "Tompkins Transportation Scout," a groundbreaking mobility initiative designed to simplify, enhance, and sustain transportation options for all residents. The community is warmly invited to celebrate this exciting milestone at our launch event at The History Center (110 North Tioga St, Ithaca, NY 14850) on April 17, 2025, from 4:00-6:00 PM. Generously funded through a Federal Transit Administration Integrated Mobility Innovation Demonstration Program grant—announced in 2020—, this initiative reflects a strong commitment to innovative transportation solutions, positioning Tompkins County at the forefront of sustainable and accessible mobility.

As a team, we firmly believe that transportation should never limit someone's potential—it should enhance it. Tompkins Transportation Scout isn't simply an app; it's our collective pledge to create a more equitable, connected, and environmentally friendly future for our community.

Registration is not necessary, but appreciated for planning purposes—those who wish to pre-register can do so at bit.ly/ScoutLaunch.

March 2025 I Ithaca Carshare Celebrates One-Year Anniversary of Reopening!

One year after reopening on March 11, 2024, Ithaca Carshare is going strong.

In 2023, Ithaca Carshare had to pause operations while a New York state bill made its way through the legislature. The bill, which passed in 2023 and was implemented in early 2024, allows nonprofit organizations in New York state to access auto insurance from national, nonprofit Risk Retention Groups, something that New York had previously banned.

Since the relaunch, Ithaca Carshare has continuously provided 24/7 carsharing services to a daily average of 1,100 members. Eligible drivers 18+ who join Ithaca Carshare have access to a fleet of vehicles they can reserve online and access themselves. Unlike a car rental, carsharing offers more flexibility in booking cars, because once a member is approved, they can book any car from any location for up to ten days at a time without reapplying.

In the first year of re-operation, Ithaca Carshare members made 11,159 bookings and drove 165,505 miles.

“165,505 miles might seem like a lot,” says Ithaca Carshare operations manager Sandy Harrison, “but if you average it across the twenty cars in our fleet, it comes to 8,275 miles per car per year. The national average for personal vehicles is over 13,000 miles a year.”

Liz Field, Ithaca Carshare’s director, adds, “We’re not only helping people live car-free, but carshare members tend to drive less because they have to plan their trips more thoughtfully, and this leads to less traffic in our city, and fewer emissions overall.”

“We lost more than $500,000 in usage revenue when we paused operations,” says Field, “and that’s been very hard on our parent organization, the Center for Community Transportation. Because of this, we’ve had a hard time getting back on track and purchasing vehicles, but we plan to purchase more this summer.”
